Introduction ✨

Abu Al-As ibn Al-Rabi (RA) was the husband of Hazrat Zainab bint Muhammad (RA), the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Known for his integrity, honor, and eventual acceptance of Islam, Abu Al-As (RA) occupies a respected place in Islamic history. His life reflects loyalty, sacrifice, and faith, offering timeless lessons for Muslims today.

Early Life πŸ•ŠοΈ

Abu Al-As ibn Al-Rabi (RA) was born into the Quraysh tribe in Makkah. He came from a noble lineage and was the nephew of Hazrat Khadijah (RA), the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He was widely respected among his people for his trustworthiness and business skills.

Marriage to Hazrat Zainab (RA) πŸ’

Before the advent of Islam, Abu Al-As married Hazrat Zainab bint Muhammad (RA). Their marriage was blessed with children, including Ali and Umamah. Although Abu Al-As initially did not accept Islam, his loyalty and deep respect for his wife remained steadfast.

The Test of Faith During Early Islam βš”οΈ

When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared his Prophethood, Hazrat Zainab (RA) embraced Islam immediately. However, Abu Al-As (RA) remained a non-Muslim at the time, which tested their marriage. Despite his refusal to accept Islam initially, he never opposed Zainab (RA) or disrespected the Prophet (PBUH).

During the Battle of Badr (2 AH), Abu Al-As fought on the side of the Quraysh against the Muslims. He was captured by the Muslims and brought to Madinah. Hazrat Zainab (RA), deeply moved, sent her mother Hazrat Khadijah’s (RA) necklace as ransom for her husband’s release. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), upon recognizing the necklace, was touched and released Abu Al-As with the condition that he send Zainab (RA) to Madinah.

πŸ“– Hadith Reference: Narrated by Aisha (RA): β€œWhen the people of Makkah sent ransom for their captives, Zainab sent some property as ransom for Abu Al-As, among which was a necklace which belonged to Khadijah.” (Musnad Ahmad)

Separation and Sacrifice 😒

Following this condition, Abu Al-As (RA) sent Zainab (RA) to Madinah, leading to a painful separation. Yet, this act showed his honor and commitment to his word. Despite their physical distance, both maintained their loyalty to one another with dignity and patience.

Acceptance of Islam πŸŒ™

Years later, Abu Al-As (RA) encountered Muslims during a trade caravan. He sought refuge in Madinah after being captured. Hazrat Zainab (RA) gave him protection until he could resolve his affairs. Eventually, his heart opened to Islam, and he accepted the faith wholeheartedly.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reunited him with Hazrat Zainab (RA) without a new marriage contract, recognizing the strength of their previous bond.

πŸ“– Reference: Narrated in Ibn Kathir’s Al-Bidaya wa’l-Nihaya that the Prophet (PBUH) returned Zainab (RA) to Abu Al-As (RA) without a new dowry or contract after his conversion.

Virtues and Legacy 🌟

Abu Al-As (RA) was known for:

  • Honesty in trade πŸ›οΈ – He was respected for his fairness and integrity.
